This month’s Student Spotlight features a brand new rock and roll band with the ambition and potential to succeed in the music industry.
The New Yorks are a four-piece alternative/indie rock band from Adelaide, South Australia. Their sophisticated sound integrates the self-assured swagger of east coast indie rock (think Triple J hitlist) with the propulsive drive of 90’s garage rock. With pronounced bass lines and big sing along choruses the band displays its reverence for influences in artists such as The Strokes and The Delta Riggs.
Both lead singer Vinnie Barbaro and drummer Jared Grimm are students currently studying in the Certificate IV in Music Business program. With a love of music from an early age, Barbaro said his recent involvement in the course has helped him plot his band’s career path.
“The course has really allowed me to gauge a strong understanding of how the Australian music scene operates on a professional level.” he said.
The band are eagerly preparing for their launch for their anticipated new EP ‘Heads of Tales’ at the Edinburgh Castle Hotel on Sunday October 2nd. Having worked tirelessly on recording new material, Barbaro is excited for their growing fanbase to hear the new tracks.
“We’re really into exploring many different facets… with some huge choruses and angular guitar work.”
The band will be supported on the night by fellow up and coming locals Donnarumma and Lost Woods.
“Working at renowned Adelaide studios including Mixmasters productions and Chapel Lane Studios, we’re really looking forward to sharing what we’ve done.”, Vinnie commented.
Overall Vinnie can’t wait for the challenges ahead in promoting The New Yorks music outside of South Australia and learning about touring effectively as an independent band.
“The [Cert IV] has already assisted me in my ability to manage my own band!”
The guys are set to take a bite out of the big apple soon enough – check out their Facebook page for more details of upcoming events.
