It’s mid-semester break and then we’re on the home stretch to the end of the year, so what better time to catch up on what everyone’s been up to? With only four weeks left until our students complete the course, it’s been a jam-packed semester for everyone!
The CUA30915 Certificate III Music Industry (Performance)* students have been adding the final touches to their songs as well as practising their stage craft and performance skills. A few weeks ago on a sunny Friday afternoon, the students all took to the street and performed to their first audience. They set up and played out the front of St. Pauls Creative Centre in the carpark to many staff, peers and passing foot traffic. It was a great lunchbreak for all attendees and the perfect opportunity for students to try out their new material prior to the end of year showcase.
The showcase will be a public event held at The Jade on October 31st. It’s free to attend and Halloween themed so come get spooky and see what all of our talented bands have been working on!
The CUA30915 Certificate III Music Industry (Performance)* students have also been finishing up assessments and have had a visit from guest speaker, Sian Walden who holds a wealth of knowledge in many aspects of the music industry from Artist Management/Services to Events and Festivals. She is the Director of Little Acorn Music, the Live Music Coordinator and Scouted Event Manager at Music SA as well as Commander of Porchland! The students really enjoyed Sian’s visit and even got to meet her doggo, June.
The CUA40915 Certificate IV Music Industry (Business) students have been expanding their brains and broadening their horizons by working on the following units; Investigating micro business opportunities, Profile the market, Undertake marketing activities, Assist with marketing and promotion, Use social media tools for collaboration and engagement as well as Apply project management techniques.
They’ve also done a publicity masterclass workshop with Libby Parker from Expressions Media and learnt from guest speakers; Skye Walter, Tom Gordon and Courtney Duka. Skye is the Marketing Manager at Music SA, and has played in a number of successful bands over the years. Tom currently plays in West Thebarton and Horror My Friend, works as an Industry Development Officer at Music SA and is involved with Artist Management Services as well. Courtney works as an event manager at Five Four Entertainment and is prominent in the organisation of SPIN OFF Festival, St Jerome’s Laneway Festival and Stonecutters to name a few.
The students have been lucky to have one-on-one time with such knowledgeable and kind industry professionals!
On top of this, there have been plenty of volunteer opportunities for students such as Listen In, Semaphore Music Festival and Houndwave. Sean Bell volunteered at Bigsound, a National Music Conference held over a week in Brisbane and Ashlea Crane attended as a guest of Moshtix. They both spoke really highly of their experiences and time there!
We’re very proud of how the students are progressing and wish them the best for the rest of their course. If you’re interested in studying at Music SA, be sure to get in touch with the Head of Training, Kim Roberts: email@example.com
