Our Student Spotlight for this month is Certificate IV Music Business student Becky Hall aka Poppi, a singer-songwriter whose work delivers sweet melancholic themes with warm ambient tones. She weaves a heart-aching soundtrack of love lost and found, into the depths of our weary souls. Poppi carries her haunting stories with raw vulnerability and honest grace.
Growing up, Poppi immersed herself in her mother’s eclectic record collection and was introduced to the music of Paul Kelly, The Beatles, Fleetwood Mac and Simon & Garfunkel. These artists awakened her hidden artistry, greatly influencing her distinctive song writing with honest storytelling.
“I write for the ones who aren’t loved back, who need their stories told for them, and for the lonely, the heartbroken, the lost and the hopeful.” explains Poppi.
Today she submerges herself in artists like Laura Marling, Dustin Tebbutt and The Honey Trees.
Poppi has recently shared the stage with triple ARIA Award winning songstress Taasha Coates from The Audreys this year, as part of her latest project Taasha and Her Melancholy Sweethearts at the Grace Emily Hotel. She has also performed locally with The Winter Gypsy, receiving overwhelming support from their audience when she supported them at Brick+Mortar Creative.
Poppi will open the Certificate IV Music Business showcase Certified Fresh on Thursday November 24th at the Hotel Metropolitan, alongside fellow student groups The Gore Edition, Pemberton, DyspOra and The New Yorks.
Poppi plans to release her upcoming debut EP in 2017.
