In the lead up to our 2023 courses, MusicSA will be highlighting some incredible local talent who also happen to be alumni of our VET and short courses!
First up Sasha Theunissen and Brooke Squire of Mums Favourite both of whom studied CUA30920 Certificate III in Music (Performance)*.
Adelaide-based, Mums Favourite is a 5-piece group with serious musical chops and a love for the bluesy indie-rock. Their sound is deeply cultured and bluesy, but the band plays it off with a tease of retro vibes and youthful attraction that keeps their fans coming back for more.
Playing together since 2017, the band continues to gain momentum in the local scene around Adelaide. They’ve sold out shows, carved their way into the music industry with well written songs and relatable lyrics, and started gaining some serious traction in terms of getting their music out there.
Q & A
What was the highlight of your experience studying with MusicSA?
The highlight of this experience was meeting new people with common shared interests.
Since starting Mums Favourite, what has been your most proud achievement?
Getting our latest single played on Triple J radio. We have definitely come very far since the first ever class at MusicSA. We went into it knowing absolutely nothing about the music industry here and it guided us through the basics. Now we have a song that was played on nation-wide radio!
What advice would you give to someone starting their journey in the music industry?
Take the same course we did! Also, utilise workshops run by industry professionals and build networks you can go to if you need help. Apply for opportunities that arise, grants, mentorships, crazy things you never think you’ll get! Don’t be afraid to ask, practise your instruments and always try to remember the reason you got into music in the first place. It can be easy to forget about the music because so much of being a musician is about the business side of things, but without the music, there would be no business.
What do you love most about the Adelaide/South Australian music scene?
The music community here in Adelaide is so supportive of each other. It’s basically like a big musical family that wants to see all of us succeed. There is so much talent in our little town and it’s always a pleasure to see friendly faces out and about at each other’s shows.
Tell us about your latest project.
We’re extremely excited to play Marksenfest 2022 on 8 October as main support for The Rions! And we’re supporting Maisie on 15 October and The Vains on 29 October both at The Cranka.
Keep your eyes peeled on our socials for a new single in November, with a single launch with two of our favourite bands, and then maybe, just maybe an EP in February that we’re currently planning an amazing launch for at Lion Arts Factory! But that’s all secret squirrel business at the moment 😉
Expressions of interest are now open for our 2023 VET courses here.
